Our History
In response to increasing demand for project management professionals in the Charleston, SC region, our Charter members gathered in April 2000 to form the Charleston Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). By the 10-year anniversary, we boasted that we had grown our membership to 410 and as of 2022 we've grown to more than 600 members.
The PMI Charleston Chapter has representation in a wide range of industries, including local and federal government, information technology, healthcare, aerospace, consulting, manufacturing, construction, energy, financial services, training, automotive, telecommunications, and pharmacy. Members include program managers, project managers, information technology professionals, engineers, designers, contract administrators, property managers and retirees.
In 2005, the State of South Carolina's CIO Office announced plans to promote project management within the state. Subsequently, SC.GMIS and PMI Charleston partnered to host the Leadership Summit. In 2010, a formal agreement was signed between SC.GMIS and PMI Charleston, whereby members of either organization could attend the other organization’s major events at the member rates of the hosting organization. In 2012, SC.GMIS and PMI Charleston agreed to co-host an Annual Leadership Summit. Many years of successful collaboration between two professional organizations and hundreds of volunteer hours result in opportunities for building new professional relationships, strengthening existing professional relationships, sharing in professional education, and enjoying the camaraderie of friends in a learning environment
PMI Charleston is focused on meeting the goals of a dedicated membership which are investing in their project management careers and professional development. PMI Charleston wants to do that through providing our members with local chapter events that provide access to knowledge, networks and resources that will foster successful completion and maintenance of the project management certifications. Chapter meetings are generally held during lunch on the third Thursday of every month between January and November (and have been virtual since 2021). The chapter meetings offer members opportunities to network and meet their fellow chapter members, share news and information about PMI, and learn PDUs needed for certification. PMI Charleston welcomes non-member participants at each of our Chapter meetings and events.
We are very grateful to present and past PMI Charleston Board members for their countless hours and dedication to the project management profession and to the Charleston community. The chapter is always looking for new ideas and volunteers. Each event and initiative is an opportunity to visibly invest in your project management career. Please contact us if you have questions or suggestions about the chapter or would like to find out about getting more involved!
