We're thrilled to share the success of the recent Executive Series event hosted by PMI Charleston Professional Development, featuring Kevin Keast, a distinguished leader with over 32 years of combined service in the US Coast Guard.

The event received widespread positive feedback, and Kevin's insights into key leadership topics at the PMI Charleston and Midlands Chapter were both enlightening and valuable. As an experienced and pragmatic leader, Kevin provided senior strategic insight into the dynamic landscape of portfolio, program, and project management, with a focus on the cybersecurity realm.

Kevin's inclusive presentation style allowed participants to fully engage and gain profound insights into strategic leadership in fast-paced and adaptive environments. His expertise in overseeing a portfolio of cutting-edge cybersecurity tools for the United States Coast Guard showcased the practical application of strategic leadership in safeguarding assets and operational IT systems.

We extend our appreciation to Kevin for his dedication to sharing knowledge and expertise, not only through his military and professional career but also as a volunteer contributing to the Board of Directors for PM Training Services Corp.

Books to Share

“Explore the dynamic intersection of sustainability and project management through curated articles. Uncover the essential factors shaping projects for a greener future, from engaging stakeholders to adopting zero-waste practices. Join us in navigating the landscape where environmental responsibility meets effective project delivery and discover the potential for positive change within project management.”

From Microsoft pmo365 - Sustainability in Project Management: A Complete Guide

This article explores the crucial incorporation of sustainability into project management and highlights its contemporary significance. It starts by defining sustainability in project management as the adoption of processes that address broader social and environmental considerations. The article emphasizes how sustainability choices within organizations are influenced by evolving societal values. It outlines the role of project managers in the modern context, where they move beyond traditional management approaches to include sustainability, directly connecting it to the long-term viability of an organization's business model. Project managers are encouraged to be innovative, considering the entire scope of a project's value and its implications for future generations.

The discussion extends to well-known sustainability frameworks, such as PRiSM and the P5 Standard, emphasizing their comprehensive approaches. These frameworks prioritize stakeholder engagement, eco-friendly practices, efficient resource management, and continuous monitoring, fostering sustainability throughout the project lifecycle. The article also provides a practical guide with seven steps to implement sustainable project management. It underscores the importance of defining clear sustainability goals, engaging stakeholders, conducting thorough assessments, and continuously monitoring progress for transparent reporting. Additionally, it emphasizes the necessity of sustainability training for project teams to ensure a deeper understanding of roles and better-equipped employees to achieve sustainability objectives in project delivery. Overall, the article highlights the transformative impact of sustainability on project management practices, offering practical insights and frameworks for seamless integration.

From PMI Publications - Six Ways to Build Sustainability into Projects (2022)

The article focuses on six key factors crucial for successfully integrating sustainability into projects, as highlighted in PMI's Global Megatrends 2022 report. To make sustainability a priority, teams need to create a plan of action and measure their efforts using concrete data. This involves actively engaging with local stakeholders and providing economic incentives to communities affected by the project. The article suggests adopting a zero-waste approach that aligns with natural processes, emphasizing a circular model for everything. It stresses the importance of examining every aspect of the value chain to identify potential sustainability challenges. The article also argues against the belief that there must be trade-offs between people, the planet, and profit, encouraging the optimal use of resources. Even seemingly simple projects like tree planting should undergo a thorough risk assessment. Lastly, the article recommends investing in technology, such as direct air capture and carbon mineralization, as a crucial method for effectively addressing climate change. By implementing these practices, project professionals and teams can contribute to creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly world.
