Reflections on the History of Project Management and the Project Management Institute

To understand the project management professional of 2015 and beyond, requires an understanding of how we have matured and changed from the project schedulers and planners of the 1960's. Where did we come from and how did PMI play a role in building a new profession? A look back at the people, places, and environment will not only tell us about our history but will help us to understand where project management may be headed and how you can influence that direction.

This presentation aims to put you back in the 1960's, to help you understand the motivation for the founding of PMI and to give you a look at the time and people. With this bit of history as a backdrop, we will then take a look at what the future may hold for the project management profession and PMI.

Please be prepared to ask questions and add your thoughts to the discussion.

Building the First “Steamship” in History

based upon his book

Steam Coffin

Captain Moses Rogers and The Steamship Savannah
Break the Barrier

Historian and author John Laurence Busch will attempt to re-calibrate your mind before showing why the proposition of making the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a "steamship" was met with a mixture of skepticism and fear. Then he will show how Captain Rogers addressed those fears, by designing and successfully managing the construction of a new kind of steam vessel.

The Savannah is more than a “steamship.”
She is the first example of globalized high technology in history.

About John Laurence Busch

John Laurence Busch is an independent historian who specializes in the first generation of steam-powered vessels, and their revolutionary role in the creation of the modern world. He has devoted years of research to discovering the true story of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah.

This led him to scour archives and libraries from Portland, Maine to Savannah, Georgia, and across the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of Europe, in search of new information on the life and career of Moses Rogers, one of the first steamboat captains in history, as well as the actors and events that resulted in the formation of the Savannah Steam Ship Company, and the construction of the steamship Savannah.

The result is STEAM COFFIN, the most descriptive account of the saga of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah ever written. The foundation for such a story rests upon the contents of never-before-published manuscripts and newspaper articles, which provide an abundance of new details illuminating the actions and attitudes of those who participated in, and witnessed, the creation and voyage of the Savannah.

John’s careful weaving together of many disparate sources results in a narrative that recalls both the fabric and style used in storytellings of old. It also shows just what Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah accomplished for posterity.

STEAM COFFIN has received widespread praise and acclaim, as evidenced by over two dozen positive reviews in periodicals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

John’s speaking tour for STEAM COFFIN so far has taken him from Maine to Puerto Rico to California, where he has given well over 300 presentations to date before a wide variety of audiences.
